JALT 2005 Was Very Worthwhile!
A hearty thanks to the almost 30 teachers who attended Biegel’s presentation at JALT 2005 on October ninth. His presentation was in the format of a discussion and was titled: Using Extended Oral Fluency Practice in Class. The discussion explored ways to get students to discuss in English for extended periods of time. Mr. Biegel played the role of a facilitator and began by introducing a technique from his textbook series, “What About You?” (McGraw-Hill) and what he observed when he used it in the classroom. The teachers who attended were asked to discuss the following issues: What are the benefits in using extended oral fluency practice in class? What are some ways to get students to discuss for extended periods in class? Are there any drawbacks to these techniques?
During the final forty minutes of the one-hour session, a very stimulating discussion occurred full of profound knowledge and insight from the experienced English teachers who attended. It was evident that most if not all who participated were deeply committed to the belief that their students not only need to practice using English in extended oral fluency practice, but they were convinced that their students as well understand the importance of extended oral fluency practice. At the end, no one could think of a drawback for such an essential practice on the road to obtaining a through mastery of English.
