So what’s with the moniker, I wonder? Could this indicate the latent desire to be a rock star and to do what rock stars do best – give themselves a nickname? If so, can Mr Wu ever compete with The Edge, Prince (since updated), Morrissey or even the great Captain Sensible – to name but a few?

Dunno.

Noodle Theory is a sort of sci-fi ghost story, beginning and ending on another world, and this odd mechanism forms a kind of envelope around the main plot, which has been posted from Earth – from the flat above Wang’s Noodle Bar in Hong Kong to be specific.

In the main story, the future success of the Chinese economy is exaggerated to the point of ludicrousness with the aim is, I think, to demonstrate how the growth of financial power can magnify the passions of mere individuals up onto a gigantic screen, like a slide projector, with money as the light source. In this particular instance, the jealousy and fickleness inherent in a love triangle end up doing something very strange to the whole universe.

The tone is dry and the style laconic, and I liked the argument that day-to-day life on other planets will inevitably be as mundane as over here. However, what struck me most was just how causally callous the author could be towards his characters. There’s some raw chilly in this bowl of noodles.
