After witnessing and surviving the horror of a bomb attack, college tutor Chris Deacon finds himself deaf and mute, and plagued by two phantoms, the inexplicable Colonel Gun and the frightening dwarf, Egghead. As his hearing returns, he begins to hear voices in his head, a distant muttering.
He has visions of other survivors committing suicide. When those visions become reality, he lives in terror that he is next. Egghead and Colonel Gun speak to him through his mind. His wife Jan, convinced her husband is on the edge of a breakdown, urges him to seek help, but Chris knows there is something deeper going on and launches a battle against his demons, a fight for his sanity and freedom from their efforts to control him.
The trail leads him to a remote forest in Northumberland, where, in a decrepit, decaying garrison house, a 50-year-old, long-forgotten military experiment is still in progress, the subjects desperately seeking freedom from their magnetic prison; a freedom which will see them take a dominant place in the world.
