The Last Good Knight
Connie J. Jasperson (author)
Book Description
An invincible knight, Sir Julian Lackland is a man of intense passion, the highest honor, and deepest loyalties. A mercenary, a bold warrior and a brilliant tactician, he is at times reckless beyond comprehension, and at times suicidal; throwing himself into both battle and love with his entire being. Lackland battles the strangest of magical creatures, and his personal demons with the same enthusiasm.
But every Good Knight has a love interest and so we meet Lady Mags. He loves her deeply and passionately, but she will never give up the sword, not even for him. She loves her life as a mercenary far too much to settle down and raise babies the way an Earl’s daughter is supposed to. As time passes, the choices that Mags make for her life leave Lackland with no choices whatsoever, and Lackland is forced down a path that takes him back to the one place he had left behind, leaving both the Rowdies and Mags. Though she knows it is her own fault, she is unable to stand being alone, and so she takes up with Golden Beau Baker who knows full well that her one true love will always be Lackland; and doesn’t really mind.
Despite the lack of resolution in his personal life, Lackland somehow endures; his innate sense of the ridiculous, wry wit and humor concealing the fragile man that is Julian Lackland. From his days as a mercenary to his years as the arms-master of Waldeyn, obsession and honor rule his life; these two things both make him and break him.
But for all that he is the invincible Great Knight there must be a crack in his armor and so there is: His own burden of guilt. Eventually Lackland breaks under it, becoming the Lost Knight. An incident occurs that changes everything and begins his descent into madness, but Beau Baker manages to keep him glued together. As Lackland often remarks, he just has to live as well as he can, and so his two great loves, Lady Mags and Golden Beau form the framework of his life anchoring his sanity and making a love triangle unlike any other.
Yet no matter what comes along, Lackland is Lackland, and even in the depths of madness Lackland remains the very soul of knightly courtesy and true nobility; endlessly seeking that which was lost, and always making the world a safer place.
Lackland fights dragons, highwaymen, and injustice with all his abilities; and in the end, this tale is the tale of Julian Lackland and the people that he loved, and how they shaped his life.
