Review

I am honored to be the first person to review this heartfelt book that should be read by everyone. "Because We Care", by Fran Lewis, deals with Altzheimers Disease and how it affects the patient, the family, the medical Doctors, friends, foundations and most of all, the caretaker.
Fran Lewis was the caretaker for her beloved mother, Ruth. Yes, there are many nursing homes that claim to care for such patients but deep down we all know awful stories about the average nursing home and how they treat patients like a number.
Ms. Lewis made the choice to care for her mother at home with as much help and advice she could obtain. Her loyalty and devotion to her mother is to be admired by anyone who knew her or heard about her.
In this book, she brings this painful disease to the surface and the issue of elder abuse. She took one step further to research the issue over the years and write books to "wake up" people who never heard of this disease or felt it was easier to ignore it and maybe it would go away.....we all know it does not go away.
Ms. Fran Lewis is my dear friend due to our common bond of being members of NYC Board of Education, Jacketflap Registry of Amazon Published Writers and members of Facebook. We have been there and done that in every sense of the word. We know all about pain and suffering. Yes, we do.
Today, there is "The Ruth Swerdoff Research Fund at Montifiore Hospital" in the hopes of one day finding a cure for this terrible disease that robs the mind.
Sad to say, this disease can affect the rich/poor, white/black, educated/non educated, tall/short, thin/fat......etc. Even Presidents of the U.S. are not safe. President Ronald Reagan suffered from Altzheimers for 10 years with his loyal & devoted wife Nancy by his side.....caring for him at home.
God bless Fran Lewis for what she represents, for her courage, for thinking of others, for being a wonderful daughter, for devoting so many years to the hope that one day there will be an end to altzheimers disease, and most of all in loving memory of her beautiful mother, Ruth.
It is the greatest honor to review this book and to donate it to The New York Public Library on 42nd Street & 5th Avenue to be considered as part of their research collection. (Steven A. Schwarzman Main Reading Room).
My name is Irene Brodsky, teacher and writer. I hope this review meant as much to the people who read it as it meant to me to write it. My heart goes out to those affected by this disease and to all caretakers who give of themselves. We all know how hard it is to do so. But we do it "because we care."
Thank you to Fran Lewis from the bottom of my heart for all that she does!
